Fast Food in the Middle East?

When people think of Americans role in the Middle East, they tend to think of our troops. But is there is an even bigger role Americans are playing there? Fast Food in the Middle East is fast becoming commonplace. American fast food restaurants are springing up in countries like Jordan, UAE, and Bahrain. Here is a list of fast food restaurants in the Middle East. What one do you find the most surprising and why, and do you believe this will contribute to a rise in obesity there?

McDonald's
Burger King
Dunkin' Donuts
Wendy's
KFC
Popeye's
Dairy Queen
Baskin Robins
Applebee's
Pizza Hut

  1. I dont find any of these chains popping up there particulary strange. I think that in many places around the world there is an interest in american culture. So why not have Mid eastern people dining on fast food. Plus if they become as obese as us we can stand a better chance in war against them. Was that politically incorrect? My bad, but seriously I think exporting more than just bombs is a good thing for us.

  2. I actually found Applebee's to be the most surprising on the list. McDonald's is a no brainer, but I wouldn't expect a primarily American restaurant chain to be over in the Middle East. It'd be really interesting to see what kind of menus they provide and whether or not they have the same kind of Weight Watchers list. Do you think that they charge for refills?

  3. I found Dunkin Donuts to be very strange. I am out in Ohio and there are very few out here. I did not expect them to be in the Middle East if it isn't even all over the US. As far as contributing to obesity I think this could cause a large issue. People tend to go there for the coffee, but stay for the donuts.

  4. I believe that America is just putting fast food restaurants in places in the middle east mostly for money. If the middle east has any interests of The United States, we should be sending informational tools, instead of unhealthy food.

  5. I thought Dunkin Donuts was the most surprising to be in the middle east, along with apllebees. The other restaurants seem to be common and popular chains, but Applebees being a restaurant ive never seen outside the US, and Dunkin Donut's having the logo "America runs on Dunkin", makes it surprising to me that they would be over there.

  6. I didn't realize that Dunkin Donuts was international. I would expect Starbucks or even Tim Horton's before DD. Baskin Robbins seems like a wise choice as it is a desert climate there! And, yes, I believe that Fas Food restaurants do contribute to obseity, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if their rates rose after a period of time.

  7. I agree with the fact that Dunkin Donuts is most suprising. "America Runs on Dunkin" should probably be changed to "American Influence runs on Dunkin" i think that in westernizing the middle east it does make sense that these entities are being brought over there. I think that it may not immediately contribute to a rise in obesity, but over time if these become more common place the middle east may experience the downside of american culture.

  8. I was surprised by several of the fast food restaurants listed, but the one I found mot puzzling was Popeye's. Its wrong that I'm thinking this, but when you think of a location for a Popeye's the first place that would come to mind, would definitely not be the Middle East =p

  9. I wasn't suprised at any of the fast food coorperations listed. Seeing as they're all large organizations who attempt to gain profit around the world, new locations in Israel and the Middle East would only seem like the next expected place! I bet that in 20 years, if the Israelis are nearly as unhealthy and lazy as us dang americans, the rate of obesity will be just as large.

  10. I would expect to find a large number of fast food chains in the middel east such as McDonalds but Dunkin Donuts was the most surprising to me. Never imagined a middle esterner sippn coffee and munchin on donuts, its so far out of their culture. It would be interesting to see all of the menu's on these resturants because they are sure to have thei rown regional flare.

  11. Wendy's. No one likes Wendy's. The square burgers just remind everyone that their meat has been processed into oblivion. At least with other fast food establishments the traditional circular patty gives the illusion of a classic burger. No one ever grilled square burgers for the Fourth of July cook out on the town common. Well, you didn't if you weren't a commie loving commie lover.

    Also, fear my spear.

  12. Burger King and McDonalds are the most unexpected to me. After all both Kosher and Muslim eating codes forbid beef... gasp!

I suppose it would be more likely to see a BK or McD's in the Middle East than in India though haha.
